Daikin Air Conditioning Technology

Indoor Air Quality and Health Did you know that Australians spend around 90% of their time indoors? While we’re all very aware of what affects outdoor air quality, we don’t often consider what our indoor air quality is like and how it could impact the health of our family.
The air inside any home contains a range of pollutants and allergens that can contribute to
poor indoor air quality, leading to potentially serious health problems for occupants.
Daikin are dedicated to delivering products and technologies that not only create a comfortable living environment, but also a healthy environment. A range of our products features innovative technology that are designed to greatly reduce the presence of contaminants in the home so you can rest easy knowing your indoor air quality is at an optimum level.

R32 Refrigerant All Daikin wall mounted split systems use R32 refrigerant. With a lower global warming potential and a higher refrigeration potential than refrigerants such as R410A, R32 systems can deliver more efficient cooling and heating with less risk of harm to the environment.

Inverter technology The inverter system works like the accelerator
of a car, gently increasing or decreasing power – helping reach the desired temperature more quickly, and steadily maintain it without fluctuations. That means uninterrupted comfort and significant savings on running costs.

Reluctance DC motor  The outdoor unit incorporates Daikin’s Reluctance DC motor. These motors  drive the compressors, using the magnetic torque of neodymium magnets in conjunction with reluctance torque. This can boost efficiency by up to 40% more than conventional motors.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Gold Coast

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Gold Coast Air Conditioning has been supplying quality air conditioning units to the Gold Coast for almost 20 years. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries have delivered engineering excellence for over 130 years across three main industries: power systems, industry & infrastructure and aircraft, defense & space.

They turned their expertise to air conditioning in 1953 in Japan and later introduced their first units to Australia and the Gold Coast in 1975.  Using a local distributor they established their first company in 1999. Through their successful operations in Australia, they steadily grew as a division of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and eventually spanned off as Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Air-Conditioners Australia in 2009.

The Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) focus is on developing world-class, highly efficient and energy saving air conditioning systems that offer comfort and reassurance to their customers. The expansion of MHI has allowed the company to provide a more diverse range of products to the Australian and New Zealand markets, and provide comprehensive support to their partners and home owners through their presence in all major and regional areas.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Reviews

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has won the Canstar Blue’s best air conditioning unit for the 4th year in a row.  It has earned a consistent five stars for all 5 categories and a 4 star for quietness. These categories include:

  1. Performance & reliability – the air conditioner produces consistent and effective cooling, has not broken and its performance hasn’t reduced considering the frequency of use
  2. Ease of use – the air conditioner produces consistent and effective cooling, has not broken and its performance hasn’t reduced considering the frequency of use.
  3. Functionality & features – the settings and functions on the air conditioner are easy to locate and instructions are easy to follow.
  4. Value for money – the cost is low for the quality and performance of the air conditioner unit.
  5. Quietness – the air conditioner operates at a volume that isn’t disturbing.
  6. Overall satisfaction – measures consumer satisfaction with an air conditioner brand as an individual score NOT a combined total of all criteria.

These reviews are gathered by feedback left by customers that have purchased and installed an air conditioning unit in the last three years. They also rate highly on the CHOICE website.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Mitsubishi Electric Air conditioning units.

Most people see the 3 red diamonds in a triangle shape and associate this with the Mitsubishi brand. The word Mitsubishi is actually Japanese for ‘three diamonds’

What most people do not know are that these are in fact two competing brands with the same logo.

One is Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and the other is Mitsubishi Electric.

Furthermore, both companies produce the same types of air conditioning units.

These include high wall split systems, multihead units, ducted units, floor/ceiling consoles and cassette units.

The Mitsubishi Heavy Industries high wall split systems come in two models.

The 2, 2.5, 3.5 and 5Kw unit sizes fall under the Avanti and Avanti Plus models.

The Avanti Plus also has a 6Kw model.

The bigger units fall under the Bronte models and come in 6.3, 7.1, 8 and 9.5Kw sizes.

All of these units are inverter models. This is the latest technology that allows the compressor to run as fast or as slow as needed depending on the heat load of the room. Think of it as a variable speed compressor rather than the older type of compressor that was either running at 100% or 0% when turned off.

They are also reverse cycle. This allows the unit to cool and heat. Perfect for our climate on the Gold Coast.

At Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Gold Coast, Coastal Coastal Commercial and Residential Air Conditioning we sell both Avanti and Bronte air conditioning units.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Features

THE LATEST R32 REFRIGERANT

All models use the latest R32 refrigerant. This lowers the previous R410 refrigerants global warming potential by almost 70%. It also uses less electricity to achieve the desired temperature compared to previous refrigerants.

GUARANTEED OPERATION RANGE These units have a guaranteed operation range from minus 15 degrees all the way up to 46 degrees. Ensuring they will work in almost all of Australia’s climates and perfect for our climate on the Gold Coast.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Operating Temperatures

Wi-Fi CONTROL

An optional adaptor can be fitted to these units and connected to your home or office Wi-Fi. This allows these units to be controlled remotely with your phone, tablet or browser.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Wi-Fi

LOUVERS

A press of the ‘3D’ button allows the louvers on the indoor unit to move automatically to the left and right while moving up and down. This allows even air flow to be distributed around the room to be conditioned.

You can also set the louvers in any vertical or horizontal position and the unit will retain these settings when it is next turned on. How smart is that?

An AUTO louver setting is also provided that will allow the unit to select the correct position based on the MODE. This makes the louvers point down during the HEATING cycle and UP during the COOLING and DRY cycles. We all remember Mrs Gillespie in year 3 telling us that ‘heat rises’. The unit will point the hot air down during the HEAT mode so it creates a swirling motion effect allowing the fan to circulate and air as effectively as possible. While on the COOL mode is will force the unit out at a high level allow the cold air to hit the warm air in the ceiling and create convection current to cool the room faster.

CLEAN AIR TECHNOLOGY

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries units all come installed with special enzyme filters which allow the unit to remove airborne allergens such as pollen, hair and dust.

A photo-catalytic filter is also fitted that allows the removal of odour causing bacteria by capturing and neutralising these particles.

A standard filter is also fitted to allow airborne particles to be caught before they enter the coil.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Clean Air Technology

SELF CLEANING MODE

Most air conditioning units will eventually start to smell. Most will have a foul or stale odour and visible mould can be seen inside where the fan blows the air out. This is a normal side effect of trying to cool a room during with our humid weather.

The self cleaning mode allows the unit to run the fan only at a very low speed after the unit is turned off to dry out in moisture and prolong the build-up of mould.

Although this feature does help in keeping mould away it will eventually need to be prorly stripped and cleaned.

We offer a premium strip and clean service clean which will remove this mould and odour.

HIGH POWER OPERATION

This button can be pressed to allow the unit to run at a higher fan speed for 15 minutes. This is best used when the unit is first turned on to cool/heat the room as fast as possible.

SILENT OPERATION

This button can be used to allow the unit to operate at a reduced noise level. As these units are so quiet we doubt you would actually use.

TIMERS

As with all air conditioning units these  units have a weekly timer that can be set to operate with up to four daily timers and up to 28 timers per week.

An on/off timer can also be used to turn the unit on or off at selected times with a 24 hour period.

The unit will switch on slightly before the set time to assure the room will be at the set temperature at the set time.

The sleep timer can be set to turn the unit off in 30 minute intervals up to a maximum of 4 hours.

LED ADJUSTMENT

The LED light on the indoor unit can be adjusted to prevent light saturation into rooms you would prefer to keep dark.

CHILD LOCK

A useful button to allow the remote control to be locked from little hands.

ENERGY SAVING

These Mitsubishi Heavy Industries have a PC board with fuzzy logic technology.  No, this is not something you would ask a robotic barber for. This is a pre-determined set of instructions that allows the  unit to adjust the compressor determined on the  mode, temperature and fan speed.

A ‘Eco Mode’ can also be selected that allows the unit to run at a reduced capacity. This reduces the power consumption while maintaining the room at the set temperature.

OTHER USEFUL FEATURES FOR MITSUBISHI HEAVY INDUSTRIES GOLD COAST UNITS

Microcomputer-Operated Defrosting

This allows the unit to do some fancy stuff during really cold temperatures. I wont go into detail, but take my word for it – its pretty fancy.

Self-Diagnostic Function

In the unlikely event your air conditioning unit were to break down, the technician can see what is wrong with the unit by entering top secret codes and moving ones arms and legs in a set of seemingly random moves.

Auto Restart Function

Starts the unit in the last operation mode if there were a loss of power.

Back Up Switch

If the remote control stops working well good news. There’s a backup switch.

The button for this can be found under the front cover to the right of the filters. This button will turn the unit on and off.

The settings cannot be changed with this button but hopefully this emergency button can get you through until you purchase a new remote or find the remote that your 2 year old has hidden.

Avanti PLUS

The Avanti PLUS models share the same features as the Avanti models however with a key difference.

The Avanti PLUS Series has a record breaking 7 star energy star rating. This is  for both heating and cooling but only for the smaller 2 Kw models. It has 6 stars for the more common 2.5Kw models which you would find in your standard bedroom. They also have about an extra star rating for their 3.5 and 5Kw units.

It does this by utilising energy saving motion sensors and a special economy operation mode. It uses these sensors to scan the room for movement and activity and adjusts the unit to suit.

If no activity is detected the unit will go into standby mode until activity is sensed again. If there is no activity sensed in a 12 hour period the unit will automatically turn off.

All units share the same remote and have slightly different indoor and outdoor unit sizes. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

At Coastal Commercial and Residential Air Conditioning we have found that good customer service equals good customer reviews. Many of our happy customers have provided us with many 5 star google reviews.  This is why we have more Gold Coast air conditioning reviews than all of our competitors.

air conditioning gold coast reviews

There are so many businesses on the Gold Coast providing air conditioning services – literally hundreds.

Just drive down the M1 and you can almost guarantee you’ll see a ute or van with ‘air conditioning’ written on the side.

The competition is fierce and having an online presence and great looking website helps. However to really stand out you need new customers that are attracted to Gold Coast air conditioning reviews – especially with 5 stars.

Word of mouth, internet searches and repeat customers all help us in our desire to keep our customers cool during summer and warm during winter.

To achieve the high number of reviews we have received, we have found the obvious trick is to do a flawless job.

From the initial customer contact, the quote, the job and the follow up you will find the team at Coastal Commercial and Residential Air Conditioning very professional and precise.

The initial site visit will involve asking you questions to know what rooms you are trying to condition.

Are you after a single wall mounted split system or more than one unit for multi rooms?

Maybe a multi-head split may be more suited to your needs. Or maybe a ducted unit with temperature-controlled zones to provide the ultimate in cool air.

Outdoor unit location will also be discussed and the switchboard will be looked at to make sure your house has sufficient power to run the unit.

Once we have all your information, we will provide an in-depth quote with name brand air conditioning unit options. All our units are name brands and offer the same five year parts and labour warranty.

We will quote you Kelvinator, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Mitsubishi Electric and Daikin. We can also quote Haier and Rinnai if you were after a cheaper brand. We can also quote Carrier and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries if they are your preferred brand.

We will back up the 5 year unit parts and labour warranty with a 5 year installation warranty. That’s how confident we are of our workmanship.

5 year warranty

The quote will include model numbers and links to each brands website so you can read up on all the features and specifications.

We will also provide a specification sheet so you can compare all the brands. Compare each unit’s star ratings or how much noise each produces. You can also check the size of both indoor and outdoor unit.

Feel free to contact us at any time during the quoting period to discuss any options or questions you may have.

Once you have decided on what unit you prefer and any options you want simply accept the quote and you will then be contacted to arrange a convenient installation date.

When the installation date arrives, we will always arrive on time and then we will walk you through the job to confirm unit position and answer any new questions you may have.

After the job is complete you can be assured that the work space will be just as clean (or cleaner) than when we arrived.

All rubbish will be removed from site and the only indication that we have been on site is that you will have a shiny new air conditioning unit on your wall and outside you house.

A detailed lesson will be provided on how to use the unit, how to use the remote and provide any tips to get the most of your new air conditioning unit.

We will back this up with an email with instructions and tips for running your new air conditioning unit.

Mitsubishi Electric 9Kw

Mitsubishi Electric 9Kw - MSZ-AS90VGD

Good news the new Mitsubishi Electric 9Kw inverter, reverse cycle air conditioning unit is finally available. The MSZ-AS90VGD indoor unit is matched with the MUZ-AS90VGD outdoor unit providing the largest high wall split system Mitsubishi Electric have ever produced.

The unit has a maximum cooling capacity of 10.3Kw insuring it will cool your room down to a comfortable temperature in no time. Once down to the set temperature the compressor will wind down to a minimum cooling output of just 2Kw.

With heating, this unit is rated at 10.3Kw and is able to ramp up to a massive 11.5Kw. Once the set temperature is reached it can wind all the way down to 2.2Kw.

The unit has a EER of 3.24 and a COP of 3.5 – this allows it to have a cooling star rating of 3.5 and a heating star rating of 3. A very respectable number compared to other brands at this size.

THE INDOOR UNIT

The indoor unit has the usual 4 manual fan speeds as well as a quiet mode and a powerful mode.

The POWERFUL setting allows the air conditioning unit to run at the lowest temperature and the highest fan for 20 minutes to cool or heat the room as fast as possible. After the 20 minutes the unit will return to its previous fan setting.

The AUTO fan setting allows the indoor unit to control the fan speed automatically. It will first run the unit on a high speed and as the unit gets closer to the set temperature it will automatically reduce the fan speed down until it is eventually running on low.

The unit has the normal COOL, HEAT, DRY, FAN and AUTO modes. Each of these settings can be viewed in this article.

FILTERS

As with all Mitsubishi Electric air conditioning units the 9Kw unit also has a built-in Anti-Allergy Enzyme Filter. This filter works by trapping allergens such as mould and bacteria by using enzymes retained in the filter to decompose them. The unit has the usually two filters that can be manually cleaned when they start to become dirty. These should be removed and hosed every 3 months.  Depending on how often you use the unit you may need to do it more or less. A typical house hold would only need to clean these filtersonce a year.

The indoor unit is coated in an advanced Dual Barrier Coating. This is applied to the indoor coil and reduces dirt and dust from sticking to it. It not only helps the unit stay cleaner for longer but also makes for easier cleaning.

Mitsubishi Electric Anti-Allergy Enzyme Filter

WI-FI CONTROL

The new Mitsubishi Electric 9Kw unit also has Wi-Fi control. This is an optional adapter that is fitted to the indoor unit that allows the unit to be controlled by a downloadable app. This innovative technology connects your Mitsubishi Electric air conditioner to your smartphone, tablet or online account, giving you the freedom to fully control each unit on-the-go via an internet connection from anywhere in the world. You can view and control your air conditioning unit by turning the unit on or off, adjust the temperature, change modes, fan speeds and airflow direction. You can also set 7 day weekly schedules. The adapter and app allows you to do everything on your smartphone, tablet or online account that you could do with the physical remote control.

You can also program your system to always meet your needs. Unlock the full potential of your air conditioning unit by programming your system to automatically turn on/off at specific times, change settings, and develop temperature rules to ensure superior comfort day after day. You can also program your unit to come on or off at set temperatures.

The apps can also work with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa so you can control the unit with your voice.

Mitsubishi Electric Wi-Fi

NIGHT MODE

Night Mode is a function that can be selected on the remote that is designed to increase comfort at night. This is achieved by reducing the LED brightness on the indoor unit, disabling the alert beeps and reducing the outdoor units operational noise levels by up to 3dB.

AUTO RESTART

As with all Mitsubishi Electric unit the 9Kw model also has an auto-start function which allows the air conditioning unit to continue to operate at its last setting after a power outage.

ENERGEX PEAK SMART METER

These units are also equipped with a Demand Response Enabling Device (DRED), which allows the activation of 3 preprogrammed modes in response to a signal sent from Energex. This is designed to help reduce the load on the electrical grid during peak demand. They also will give you a $200 cashback for each air conditioning unit over 3.5Kw that has a Peaksmart meter installed.

THE OUTDOOR UNIT

The outdoor unit is coated with ‘Bluefin’ technology. This is a corrosion resistant coating to help reduce the effects of the outside elements degrading the coil. This in turn assists with the longevity and quality of the unit operation.

R32 REFRIGERANT

These units also use the latest R32 refrigerant. This refrigerant enables increased energy efficiency compared to R410A, with just one third of the global warming potential, the risk of environmental harm is greatly reduced.

What size Air Conditioner best suits me?

By Air Conditioning News

Helping Gold Coasters choose the correct Air Conditioning Unit suitable to their individual needs!

2.5Kw for a bedroom, 5Kw for a garage sized room and a 7Kw for a big lounge. Sounds simple enough and in some cases that might work however there are other factors to consider when trying to find the correct air conditioner unit size for a room.

The size and shape of the room play the major part, however room insulation and the amount of sunlight also play an important role. The orientation of the room also makes a huge difference.

Size of the Room

Installing an Air Conditioning Unit that is too big for a room seems like a good idea as it will cool the room down quicker, however, there may be side effects. If the unit is too over sized, it will cool the room to fast not allowing the moisture to be removed from the room. The room will feel cool however the room will feel uncomfortable due to the humidity being too high.

Comfortable Air Conditioning in your Gold Coast living room

Comfortable Air Conditioning in your Gold Coast living room

Buying an Air Conditioning Unit that is too big will also cost you more to buy the unit. The installation price may be higher also. The unit may also not have as good an energy star rating costing more to run.

Putting in an air conditioning unit that is to small has the obvious disadvantage of working too hard to achieve the desired temperature. A unit that works to hard will have a lot more wear and tear. Running costs will be higher and you may void the warranty due to it being undersized and being overworked.

A correctly sized air conditioning unit will cool the room in a reasonable enough time to remove the humidity. Once the room is at the correct temperature the compressor will wind down allowing it to maintain the room temperature and allowing for maximum energy savings. This is where the inverter compressor really shines – as its energy saving are best at this reduced load.

TYPE OF ROOM: What is the room being used for? Bedrooms have a smaller heat load as they are typically used only at night. Rooms with a number of heat sources (people or computers) may need to be factored into the calculation.

ORIENTATION OF ROOM: Rooms that face east usually receive the morning sun and west facing rooms receive more sun in the afternoons. North facing rooms receive sun most of the day. South facing rooms usually need less cooling as they do not receive any direct sun.

Air Conditioner Size room orientation

GLASS WINDOWS: Glass windows allow a lot of heat transfer from outside.  Ideally double glazing will be optimal as it will drastically reduce this heat transfer. However this is not usually viable due to the cost. This is where internal and external shading becomes necessary.

SHADING: External shading such as blinds, awnings and shadows can drastically reduce the amount of heat build-up in a room. Internal shading such as curtains and blinds also make a difference. The more direct sun you can keep from entering your house the cheaper it will be to keep it cool or warm.

INSULATION: Rather than relying on a thin layer of plasterboard between the hot roof space air and the inside of your house, having a layer of ceiling insulation will make a huge difference. There can be a 10 degree difference between the interior of a house with and without ceiling insulation. Insulated walls can also make a huge difference. Apartment usually have concrete floors and ceiling and this is also a good insulator.

SEALING: Large open rooms will not hold the heat as well as a bedroom with a closed door. Most open plan living areas open up to hallways and other rooms without doors. Gaps under doors and between rooms can all add up to heat transferring between rooms.

THE AIR CONDITIONING UNIT

INDOOR POSITIONING: Although not so critical in bedrooms as they are usually small square shaped rooms the positioning of the air conditioning unit in the larger rooms can help a lot. The most central location can help even air flow which helps with an even temperature in the room.

OUTDOOR POSITIONING: Most outdoors positions are suitable for residential air conditioning units. That is because they are usually placed against a wall. If you are putting the outdoor unit on a roof facing it blowing north is usually best. This is because you do not want any direct sun blowing on the back of the coil. The coils transfer heat and if the sun is shining on these coils it can add an extra load on the system having to get rid of this heat.

EFFICIENCY:  Almost all air conditioning units are inverter models these days. These have a compressor which regulates its speed as to how much heating or cooling it needs to do. These variable speed compressors have a huge energy savings compared to the older either ‘on or off’ models.

Energy ratings are usually similar throughout the size ranges. With the smaller 2.5Kw units usually having about 5 stars for cooling and heating. By the time you get up to 7kw models the star ratings drop to about 2.5 stars. And usually about 2 for the 8 and 9Kw models.

Weather its a cheaper Kelvinator or more expensive Daikin unit they usually have similar energy ratings.

Calculating the size of your room for your Brand New Air Con Unit

The air conditioner unit size needs to be calculated for the room.

We need to find the area of the room. This is calculated by length x width.

Air Conditioner Size Length x width

Ceilings are usually about 2.4 meters high. Anything higher than this should be added to the calculation. Cathedral ceiling usually have more heat transfer due to having no ceiling space and being closer to the roof tiles or tin above.

After finding the area of the room we need to multiply this by the amount of watts per square meter. The number of watts depends on the room.

A bedroom can be calculated at about 0.13 Kw to cool 1 x square meter – this has a lower value as most bedrooms are only used at night times when there is not a large heat load on the building.

Living areas can be calculated at about 0.15 Kw to cool 1 x square meter.

The Kw per square meter may be more depending on room insulation, sunlight and room orientation. The height of the ceiling can also affect the calculation.

Step by step method:

1: Measure the width of the room in meters the air conditioner will be in.

2: Measure the length of the room in meters the air conditioner will be in.

3: Multiply the length and the width of the room to find the area of the room.

4: Multiply the area of the room by the Kw per square meter 0.13 – 0.15Kw

Example:  You have garage that you want to air condition.

1: Measure the width of the room -The garage is 6 metres wide.

2: Measure the length of the room -The garage is 6 metres long.

3: Multiply the length and the width of the room.

The garage is 6 metres long and 6 metres wide.

6 x 6 = 36

The area that you need to cool would be 36 metres squared.

4: Multiply the area of the room by the Kw per square meter.

If you multiply 36 by 0.15 you will get 5.4.

You would need an air conditioner size unit with a cooling capacity of about 5.4kW.

You may be able to use a 5Kw unit if the room is fairly insulated and has no direct sun.

If you have a large panel garage door that receives the direct sun you would be better off choosing a air conditioner size unit of about 6Kw.

TYPICAL UNIT SIZES

Room size Capacity
Small Up to 20m2            Bedroom, study, small kitchen 2–2.5kW
Medium 20–40 m       Bedroom with ensuite, small lounge 2.5–5kW
Large 40–60 s m2       Large bedroom, mid-sized lounge, large kitchen 5–8kW
Extra Large 60–80 m2 Open-plan areas, large lounges 7–9kW

Air Conditioning Remote Symbols Settings

By Air Conditioning News

Does your air conditioning remote scare you? Do you only press the power button and maybe the temperature up or down arrows in fear you may muck up the setting? Read on to find what your air conditioning remote symbols mean and what they do.

Do you look at the sun symbol and wonder if you use it on a sunny day to cool the room or on a winters day to heat the room? Most remotes for different brands of air conditioning units share the same features.

In this article we will explain what each symbol means and what it does.

The first button is the one that turns the air conditioning unit off and on. This is usually a different colour than the rest of the other buttons. It is usually orange or yellow but can also be red, blue or green.

It can have ON/OFF or START/STOP written on it or just have the POWER symbol which looks like the following.
or

One press to turn the unit on and another press to turn it off. Once turning the unit off the current settings will be kept and it will continue on these setting once the unit is turned back on.

The temperature buttons are usually up and down arrows with TEMP written by them. Pressing the UP button will increase the set temperature and pressing the DOWN button will decrease the temperature.

Most units have a MODE button which will cycle through the air conditioning units’ different operations. Fujitsu and Panasonic remotes have simplified things by having the words HEAT and COOL instead of small symbols to resemble the sun and a snow flake.

Most units will have a snow flake or ice symbol for the COOL mode. This mode is used to cool the room and would typically be used during summer.

oror

The sun symbol represents HEAT mode. This is the opposite of the cool mode and is used to heat the room, usually during the cooler winter months.

oror

A teardrop or water symbol is used to show the DRY mode. This mode is used to reduce the humidity in the room when the air is warm and very humid.

ororor

The indoor fan speed is automatically reduced in this mode so that the air spends longer moving across the indoor units cooling coils, to extract more moisture from the air. Dry mode can be an efficient and effective option in those conditions as reducing the humidity makes the air feel cooler and more comfortable. However if it’s very hot and only moderately humid, the cooling mode will be much more effective. The temperature cannot usually be increased or decreased in this mode.

The last symbol in the MODE setting is usually AUTO.

oror

This mode will allow the unit to automatically select the cooling or heating mode depending on the set temperature. Unless you live in a climate where there are large temperature swings, (Melbourne) you are probably better of manually selecting the COOL or HEAT symbols.

The FAN setting is shown by a fan blade symbol.

ororor

This mode allows the unit to run as a fan only. As it just recycles the air in the room it neither heats or cools. The air may feel cool as it does the same job as a ceiling fan and the evaporation of body sweat on a hot day may feel like it is slightly cool.

The indoor fan speed can be controlled by pressing the FAN button. Each time you press the button the fan speed will increase as represented by the fan symbol on the remote screen. Most units have a minimum of 3 manual fan speeds and most newer units have up to 5 speeds. If you keep pressing the fan button you should eventually come to an AUTO FAN symbol. With this setting selected the unit will automatically select the fan speed depending on the current and set temperature. The unit will make the fan run at a high speed when it is first turned on and as the temperature approaches the set temperature it will reduce the fan speed, until eventually it is just ticking over on low speed. If the temperature in the room increases (in cooling mode) the fan will automatically adjust the fan speed to suit.

Some units also have a QUIET or SILENT fan option where the unit will run the indoor fan speed at a very low settings. This could be used at night time.

oror

A POWERFUL or TURBO button can sometimes be found on some units.

oror

This allows the unit to run the fan at maximum fan speed for maximum cooling or heating and to push the air further around the room. Some brands have a timer where after a set amount of time the unit will go back to its previous fan setting.

We suggest always leaving the fan on AUTO and let the indoor unit automatically select the correct speed.

The POWERFUL button should be used to quickly bring the room to the required set temperature.

Selecting a manual LOW fan speed should not be used when first turning the unit on as the unit will take a lot longer to cool/heat the room. Having the unit initially set to a low fan speed may not be enough to cool or heat the room. Higher fan speeds (or AUTO) allow the unit to quickly push the cool (or hot) air throughout the room. The greatest energy savings are once the room is close to the set temperature and the fan has automatically started to run on low settings. Not only is the unit running most economically it is also running very quiet.

Most units have a button that can control the vertical position of the louver. The louver is the horizontal blade that runs across the front of the unit. Pressing this button usually allows the blade to move to the next position up or down.

Each push allows another small movement and then the blade will move back up the other way. Sometimes each push of the button will eventually get to the auto mode where the louver will continually move up and down by itself. Sometimes there is a separate auto louver button on the remote that will do the same thing.

Some units also have an AUTO mode where the unit will select the best position for the blade – this is usually pointing across the room for cooling and down for heating.

Some units may have a button that allows the horizontal louver to move left and right to allow the air to move in this direction.

Most modern units have a timer function that allow the unit to turn on or off at or after a pre-set time. Some units have built in sensors that scan the room for movement. If no movement is detected after a certain amount of time, it will raise or lower the temperature to reduce energy costs.

Some brands like Panasonic have nanoe X technology that help in the inhibition of virus, bacteria, pollens and mould.  Some units have special filtration that allows the removal of dust and can inhibit the growth of bacteria, mould and deodorise the air. SELF CLEANING functions can also be found on some units. This function is used once the unit is turned off and allows the indoor fan motor to be run at a very low speed to dry any moisture left in the air conditioning unit. This supposedly prevent mould build up.
