AIR QUALITY
Air quality is maintained throughout the home with the apple catechin and ion deodorising filters. Fine dust, invisible mould spores and harmful microorganisms are absorbed onto the apple-catechin filter by static electricity. Further growth is inhibited and deactivated by the polyphenol extracted from apples. The ion deodorisation filter decomposes absorbed odours using the oxidising and reducing effects of the ions generated by the ultra-fine-particle ceramic.

Mitsubishi Electric Split System – AP Series

By News

Introducing the newest addition to the Mitsubishi Electric split system, wall mounted line up. The Mitsubishi Electric AP Model

I’m not sure how Mitsubishi choose the letters to define their models but I’m guessing the AP stands for Aesthetically Pleasing, because this new model is very streamlined and blends in with a modern home. The sharp right angles look great and it will butt right up to the corner of the wall if a side exit installation is necessary. The Mitsubishi Electric split system louvered flaps close to form a right angle and both open up to direct the air in the required direction. All units now have motor driven left and right louvers also to direct the air in either side direction.

Mitsubishi Electric AP

QUIET OPERATION – As with all Mitsubishi Electric split system models these also are extremely quiet, producing as little as 18 decibels on the low setting. Perfect for bedrooms where they are whisper quiet.

POWERFUL BUTTON – The large models still feature the ‘powerful’ button which can be pressed to allow the units fan to work at an extra high speed to cool or heat the room faster. This setting will stay on for 15 minutes and then the fan will drop back to the previous setting.

LONG AIRFLOW – A ‘Long’ button is also a feature of the 6, 7 and 8Kw models. This button kicks the front louver up at a higher angle allowing the unit to push air up to 11 meters across the room.

NEW VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL VANE DESIGN – New vertical and horizontal vanes are double the size of the previous model, allowing the airflow direction to be adjusted and improving airflow control effectively. These functions can be activated at the touch of a button on your remote controller.

ADVANCE INVERTER TECHNOLOGY – All units have fast speed cooling and heating with major energy savings compared to the older non-inverter technology thanks to Advanced Inverter Technology. Up to 30% energy savings are possible and there are the no temperature differences like older non-inverter units thanks to the way the unit maintains an almost constant set temperature.

WI-FI CONTROL – All models can still be controlled via an app on your phone with an additional Wi-Fi add on card.

DUAL BARRIER COATING – The outdoor units’ aluminium fins are coated in a special anti-corrosion treatment that helps protect the heat exchanger from harsh environments including salt air due to living close to the sea. Dual Barrier Coating designed to reduce dust and greasy dirt from collecting in the unit, providing long-lasting protection to the heat exchanger, fan and air ducts. Another feature invented by Mitsubishi Electric

ENERGEX PEAK SMART COMPATIBLE – All units are capable of being fitted with an Energex peak smart meter.
Installing one of these on 4.2, 5, 6, 7 and 8Kw units will allow you to claim a $200 cashback. This is an incentive from the government to allow them to take the stress of infrastructure during high demand (peak) times.
Unfortunately, Energex have stopped the $100 cashbacks on the smaller 2.5 and 3.5Kw models.

LATEST REFRIGERANT – The latest R32 refrigerant insures minimal harm to the environment.

WARRANTY – Mitsubishi Electric AP models still offer a generous 5 year warranty. And as we find these units to be the most reliable of all the units we sell, you would be very, very unlucky to have a unit that would develop a fault within this period.

air conditioning energy star rating

Air Conditioning Energy Star Rating

By News

What Is The Air Conditioning Energy Star Rating?

The air conditioning energy star rating is an indicator of how efficient an appliance is compared to a similar product of the same size.

This air conditioning energy star rating is based on standardised testing which is required by law and conducted in line with Australian and New Zealand standards. It is a simple and fair way of comparing the energy consumption of products that perform a similar task.

The higher the amount of stars the more energy efficient this unit will be.

Most split system air conditioning units will have an energy star rating of between 1 and 6. These stars can increase in half star increments.

Ducted air conditioning units are not required to have an energy rating however this can be calculated by using the information below.

air conditioning energy star rating

If the air conditioning unit has a heating and cooling function (reverse cycle) then a red sticker will be used for the heating star rating and a blue sticker for the cooling rating. Some newer appliances now have up to 10 stars to reflect there energy efficiency. If a product is rated at 6 stars or less, it will not show the extra star ‘super efficiency rating’ band above the normal six stars.air conditioning energy star rating

The above example shows that the unit is rated 7 stars while in the cooling mode and 4 stars in the heating mode. When comparing air conditioning units you can compare the effiency of different units using the star ratings. It is important that you compare these units with other units with the same or similar size. You can find the output size of the unit in the middle of the label as seen below.

Capacity output and power input

air conditioning energy star rating

These figures show you the amount of heating or cooling an air conditioning unit can produce. For air conditioners, the measure of energy efficiency is the Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) for cooling and the Coefficient Of Performance (COP) for heating. The EER and COP are defined as the capacity output divided by the power input. This can be calculated in the above example as 4.75 (power output) divided by 0.82 (power input). This gives an EER of 5.79. The higher the EER and COP the more energy efficent the unit will be.

What Does Air Conditioning Energy Consumption Mean?

This is a number that represents how much electricity a particular model will use.

This is also based on standardised testing which is required by law and conducted in line with Australian and New Zealand standards.

This number can be used to let you know how much power this unit will consume over a year. You can use this number to compare any model – even if the sizes or capacities are not the same. A standard kilowatt is usually about .028 cents per hour – this can change depending on your electricity provider or change if you have solar panels.

air conditioning energy star rating consumption

The average cost to run a reverse cycle air conditioning unit is estimated to be between  $0.20 – $0.35 per hour. A medium sized room of 36sqm would cost $0.30 – $0.70 per hour to run. A larger area (50sqm) will cost between $0.70 and $1.00 per hour to run.

A ducted air conditioning unit can cost between $0.50 and $3.50 per hour to run. The amount of zones and rooms turned on at the same time can make a significant difference.

There are many factors to allow for when calculating a room. Window size and position, ceiling heights, direct sun onto walls, shading, insulation in the walls and roof and the amount of people or equipment in the room.

Air conditioning energy star rating calculator

air conditioning energy star rating calculator

An air conditioning energy star rating calculator can be viewed here  to rate air conditioning units and other appliances.

A free app can be downloaded on iTunes or Google Play

Once you have purchased your air conditioning unit make sure that it is well maintained and serviced. This will make sure that it is running at its peak and most efficient.

Having the indoor unit premium cleaned will make sure there is not a build up of mould and dirt in the coils, fan and in the drip tray.

Air Conditioning EER and COP

Air Conditioning EER and COP

By News

Air Conditioning EER and COP

The air conditioning EER and COP numbers are a quick way of seeing how energy efficient an air conditioning unit is.

Choosing the correct size and type of heating or cooling system can have a huge impact on the household electricity and energy costs.

It is shown that heating and cooling costs account for an average of 30 to 40 percent of an average Australians household energy use.

An air conditioning EER and COP level can be used to determine how energy efficient an air conditioning unit is.

The COP value is a ratio that measures the energy efficiency of the HEATING performance.
The EER value is a ratio that measure the energy efficiency of the COOLING performance.

The COP is the Coefficient Of Performance.

This is a measurement of the amount of power input to a system compared to the power output by that same system.

The COP is therefore a measurement of efficiency; the higher the number, the more efficient the system is.

If we use an electric heater as an example, we can see that for each watt of power input (in electricity) we will get one watt of heat output. So, this heater would have an COP of 1.

An air conditioning unit transfers heat from one place to another with the help from a refrigerant and temperature and pressure variations.

During heating it will transfer unwanted cool air (from the room) to somewhere it is not needed (outside).

A 2.5Kw split system has a COP of about 5. This means that for every watt of energy used to run the air conditioning unit it will convert it into 5 watts of heat.

Usually the smaller the air conditioning unit is the higher the COP and EER ratio. Most air conditioning units have a COP of between 3.5 and 5kW.

The EER is the Energy Effiency Ratio.

This is the same as the heating ratio however it is used while the unit is cooling.

Usually the smaller the air conditioning unit is the higher the COP and EER ratio. Most air conditioning units have a COP of between 3 and 5kW.

Almost all new air conditioning units have the heating and cooling function. These units are called reverse cycle units.

Air conditioning units are by far the most energy efficient way to heat or cool an area.

An inverter air conditioning system, varies the speed of the compressor, delivering precise cooling or heating power as required. It is basically a variable speed motor.

This variable speed compressor makes them very energy efficient. The result is a powerful, quiet, precise, energy saving solution for your air conditioning needs.

air conditioning EER and COP

The energy star rating is also an excellent way to check how efficient your air conditioning unit is.

Inverter Air Conditioning

What Is Inverter Air Conditioning?

Not to long ago an air conditioning compressor had one speed – these are now referred to as non-inverter, fixed speed or conventional air conditioning units. Non inverter or Fixed speed air conditioning units deliver a fixed amount of power via a fixed speed. This means the compressor has to stop and start to maintain the desired room temperature. The unit was either turned off or running at 100%. Inverter air conditioning system, varies the speed of the compressors, delivering precise cooling or heating power as required. It is basically a variable speed motor.

Most air conditioning units these days have an inverter drive motor.

inverter air conditioning

How Does An Inverter Air Conditioning work?

An Inverter is used to control the speed of the compressor motor, so as to continuously regulate the temperature. The Inverter units have a variable-frequency drive that comprises an adjustable electrical inverter to control the speed of the electromotor, which means the compressor and the cooling / heating output. The drive converts the incoming AC current to DC and then through a modulation in an electrical inverter produces current of desired frequency. A microcontroller can sample each ambient air temperature and adjust accordingly the speed of the compressor.

The amount of cooling or heating required by an air conditioning unit varies depending on the outdoor temperature and the amount of heat in the room.

When the cooling or heating capacity needs to be increased, the compressor will operate at a high speed and will increase the amount of refrigerant flow.

Conversely, during moderate outside temperatures for example, when the cooling and heating capacity needs to be decreased, the compressor will operate at a low speed and will decrease the amount of refrigerant flow.

When the inverter air conditioning is switched on, the compressor operates at a high speed in order to cool or heat the room quickly. As the room temperature approaches the set temperature, the compressor slows down, maintaining a constant temperature and saving energy. Any sudden fluctuation in the room temperature, will be sensed and instantly adjusted to bring the room temperature back to the set temperature. Inverter air conditioning use between 30-50% less electricity to operate.

Benefits Of An Inverter Air Conditioning Unit

  • The inverter air conditioning unit has an increased efficiency in comparison to traditional air conditioning units. A 2.5Kw inverter unit (for example) can run between 1kw to 3.5Kw – depending on what is required.
  • The life of the parts are extended.
  • Quicker to achieve the desired temperature
  • The start up time is reduced by 30
  • No temperature fluctuations, maximising comfort level
  • Much quieter

Back to Back Air Conditioning

By News

What Is A Back to Back Installation?

On the Gold Coast, air conditioning is a must. With our hot and humid climate most of the year, having an air conditioning unit can make the difference between tossing and turning all night and having a good nights sleep. Even dropping the temperature down a couple of degrees and reducing the humidity in the air makes for a comfortable environment. It is important to be able to cool or heat your room or house effectively. As buying and installing an air conditioning unit is a big investment you need to do it right. The most cost effective way is called  a back to back installation.

A back to back installation is also the cheapest option. It is used for wall mounted split air conditioning systems.

The indoor unit is mounted backing onto an exterior wall. The outdoor unit is directly behind it. Both the indoor and outdoor unit are back to back – as the name implies.

This is the cheapest to install as there is minimal amount of pipes, cables and drains.

back to back installation

back to back installation

Another option is a side to back installation.

This is when the indoor unit is installed in the corner of the room and the outdoor unit is installed perpendicular to it outside. The indoor unit is usually installed in the corner of the room.

Both of these installations have the air conditioning unit backing onto an exterior wall – this is because any water that forms inside the indoor unit must fall from the bottom of the unit. Having the unit on an exterior wall allows this water access outside where we can drain it to a downpipe or a garden.

Like most things, air conditioning units need regular maintenance. Without this regular air conditioning cleaning your air conditioning unit can suffer from an increase in electricity bills and a decline in performance.

A decline in performance puts unnecessary stress on other parts of the system.

The compressor and fans must work harder and longer trying to cool or heat the area.

Below are several ways to clean your air conditioning unit to make sure your air conditioning unit is running as well as it should.

Clean The Filters

All air conditioning units have filters and these air conditioning filters need regularly cleaning.

These are to filter the air by catching dust particles before it gets sucked and recycled through the indoor fan coil. Any air that bypasses the filter can carry dirt which will get stuck on the fan coil. This will reduce the fan coils capability to absorb the heat from the room making your air conditioning unit run longer and use more electricity.

A blocked filter can increase energy consumption by up to 15%.

The filters job is to catch small dust particles preventing them being sucked into the air conditioning coils where they can restrict airflow and increase running costs. They also improve the air quality of the air that you breathe.

Most wall split systems air conditioning filters can be reached by lifting up the front panel. These usually have a hinge on top of the unit and you lift the front cover by unclipping the bottom right and left clips. To clean your air conditioning unit pull the front cover up towards the ceiling and it should stay open once it is lifted high enough. The filters can be easily seen and removed. Most modern units have two separate filters.

Cleaning filters is not enough to remove all of the contamination that has built up in your air conditioning unit. Photos of excess build up can be viewed on our cleaning page.

Ducted air conditioning filters  are usually inside the return air grill. This is the big grill in your ceiling that sucks the air back into the unit. The air is recycled through the fan coil and blows back out of the grills.  To get access to the filter undo the screw on one end of the grill. The grill should then hinge down and the filter should slide out of the end.

Wash the filter with a hose and lean it against a wall leaning on one corner to allow the water to run out. Do not vacuum or brush the filter as this can damage it.  While the filter is drying wipe, vacuum and clean the air conditioning grill.

Once the filter is dry then slide it back into the grill.

As the air conditioning filters absorb the smells from the environment you may find that the filters need replacing if they continue to smell. This is sometimes the case if you have pets.

Your air conditioning filters should be checked every 3 to 6 months depending on how often you use your ducted air conditioning unit.

Cleaning The Indoor Unit

Simply spray on your regular household cleaning product to the exterior of the indoor unit.

Let it sit for a minute and then wipe it off.

Special care should be paid to the top of the unit. This is the part that sucks the air. You will usually find a lot of dust around this part.

Once the filters have been removed from the indoor unit you should see the fan coil.

This can be sprayed with a suitable cleaning solution, leave it for a few minutes, and then rinse it off with warm water. Don’t worry about spillage or mess, as most if not all of the runoff will be caught in the drip pan. Rinse the fan coil until the runoff is completely clear and no solution remains, but be careful not to flood the drip pan! Allow it to drain off before rinsing further. Allow the fan coil to dry at least partially before putting the chassis back on.

This will remove some of the dirt from the front of the coil. However most of the dirt is buried deep inside the coil. Excessive dirt and foreign matter can also usually be seen on the fan barrel. Mould can also usually be seen just inside the air conditioning unit where the air exits the unit. This can usually also be smelt when the air conditioning unit is first turned on as it has a distinctive stale odour.

The indoor air conditioning coil offers perfect breeding conditions for mould, bacteria and mildew. The moist, humid air allows these to thrive.

Many years ago the only way to remove this was to remove the fan barrel and other parts from the air conditioning unit to allow them to be cleaned.

Today we have a simpler, cheaper option.

We offer a premium cleaning service where we remove the covers from the indoor unit exposing the coil. We spray the coil, fan and surrounding areas with a special non-toxic, biodegradable, antibacterial solution that kills and removes any mould or other foreign matter.

We then spray it off with  jets of hot water to reveal a near new air conditioning look.

Cleaning The Outdoor Unit

The outdoor unit also needs to be cleaned as it needs good airflow to allow the air conditioning unit to remove the heat in the coils. Any loose grass, leaves and dust will all be pulled into the back of the air conditioning unit when it is running as the fan sucks the air through the unit. The bigger objects should be removed by hand and the rest can be sprayed with water from your garden hose. This high-pressure water should dislodge most of the dust and dirt.

The outdoor unit can also be sprayed with a household cleaning product and then wiped dry.

Make sure there is nothing to close to the outdoor unit as this can restrict the air flow and reduce your air conditioner’s ability to cool the air.
